According to Chinese medicine, winter is the Yin season of quiet, still, and calm. It is time for us to slow down, conserve energy, and rest. It is a great time to replenish your mind, body, and spirit through inward reflection.
It is also the perfect time of year to cozy up on your sofa, watch old movies, and read while listening to soft jazz music.
Here are a few of my favorite winter day movies, streaming options, and books. Enjoy and recharge yourself for spring!
Movies:
The Intern: This one is ten years old but still resonates. An older man (Robert Dinero) interns under a younger woman who has started a massive e-commerce business for women. The life moments are relevant, and Anne Hathaway does a solid job of trying to manuever success, marriage, and motherhood. There are moments in this one that still get me emotional. If you haven’t seen it, now is a good time!
Dr. Strange: Anything Marvel will do. Seriously. But if you asked me what my favorite movie is besides Avengers Endgame, it would be Dr. Strange. The storyline of letting your ego go and becoming who you are meant to be will always resonate with me. The humor is dry, Benedict is handsome, and Tilda, as usual, slightly frightens me. There are numerous messages in this one. Every time I watch it, another a-ha moment happens internally. Stan Lee would be proud.
Streaming:
Ted Lasso: If you know, then you know. If you haven’t carved time out to watch this one its time. There are so many moments in this series, too many for me to even try to summarize, however here is what you need to know. It’s a show about humans doing human things and learning from those moments, good and bad. Pay the fee for Apple TV, you won’t regret it. Sidenote: it is still in the top 10 shows watched on Apple TV.
Nate Bargatze: He has several stand-up specials on Netflix, but my favorite is “Hello World” on Prime. He delivers punchlines in a way that makes laughter nonnegotiable. Whenever I need a pick-me-up, this is my go-to. Check out the trailer below to see if you want to commit to the entire show!
